Liam, your edges were strong on the turns today. Good edges let you keep your speed. Next, keep your head up with the puck. You’ll see the pass sooner. Your gap on the rush was good. You gave the puck carrier no room.

Hockey FAQ

Questions hockey
coaches and parents ask.

Rate specific skills one at a time, on one scale for every player. Rate what holds up at game speed. Then name one strength and one skill to work on next. Repeat it through the season so the ratings show growth. UpLVL tracks 30 hockey skills this way.
UpLVL rates every player in four areas. Technical, such as skating, puck handling, passing and shooting. Tactical, such as positioning, puck support and defense. Physical, such as speed & acceleration, agility & change of direction and athleticism. Mental, such as attitude, coachability and communication.
Young players start with a few broad skills. Each one splits in two as they improve. Skating splits into Edge Control & Crossovers and Backward Skating & Pivots. Puck Handling splits into Stickhandling and Puck Protection. Passing splits into Pass Accuracy and One-Touch & Advanced Passing. Shooting splits into Wrist Shot and Slap Shot & Power Shots. Defense splits into Gap Control & 1v1 and Defensive Zone Coverage.
Under USA Hockey rules, body checking is prohibited at 12 and under and below, and in all girls and women's age groups. Body contact, angling and stick checks stay legal. UpLVL follows these rules for each team's age group.
Start with these drills: Forward Stride Basics (skating), Stationary Stickhandling Figure-8 (puck handling), Stationary Tape-to-Tape Pass (passing), Stationary Wrist Shot Mechanics (shooting), Angling the Puck Carrier (checking). All of them are free and each has a diagram.
