How it works

Teach young players basic on-ice position awareness by responding to color cues that correspond to zones on the ice.

What you need

Your focus

Position awareness requires players to know where they are on the ice relative to teammates, opponents, and zones , a spatial skill that must be introduced early. A color-code game makes zone awareness concrete and fun, helping young players build an internal map of the ice surface. Early spatial awareness development directly accelerates positional understanding at all subsequent levels.

Mark three zones with colored cones: defensive zone red, neutral zone yellow, offensive zone green.

Players skate freely; coach calls a color and all players must immediately skate to and stand in the correct zone.

Add a rule: no more than 3 players in any one zone at a time, creating positional decision-making.

Run for 5 minutes; celebrate players who find the correct zone quickly and fill the least-populated zone.

Goal

You've got it when you're already in your color zone before the play develops, not scrambling to get there after the puck moves.
