How it works

Develop elite puck handling in tight spaces by controlling the puck at speed through a compressed course simulating defender pressure.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

The ability to handle the puck effectively in tight space , two feet from a defender, in a narrow lane, in the corner , is what separates elite players in competitive hockey. Tight-space puck control drills train the fine motor precision and body shielding technique needed to maintain possession when physical space is limited. This skill directly translates to board battles, corner play, and creating space in the offensive zone.

1

Set up a 6-foot-wide corridor using cones; the course includes two 90-degree turns.

2

Player skates the corridor at full speed with a puck, maintaining control through both turns.

3

A passive defender stands at each turn and forces the player to shield the puck through the corner.

4

Run 8 reps; the course becomes progressively narrower by 1 foot each round.

Goal

You've got it when you navigate the tight course without losing the puck to the boards or slowing to regain control.

Helpful cues

  • Body between the defender and the puck, always
  • Tight puck, keep it close to your skates in the narrow section
  • Speed through the corridor, not speed in a straight line, they are different skills

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the turns initially, straight corridor only at high speed.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Active defenders try to poke-check through the corridor walls, player must maintain puck control against real pressure.
