How it works
Build advanced puck handling at game speed by executing a series of deking moves through a structured circuit.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- cones
- ice
Your focus
Deking requires precise coordination between skating edge changes and puck movement , the blade must shift the puck in sync with the body move to sell the fake. A circuit format develops multiple deke types in the same session, building the puck handling repertoire needed to beat defenders in a variety of situations. Repetition at speed makes deking automatic under game pressure.
Set up a circuit: (a) forehand-to-backhand deke through two cones, (b) tight inside turn with puck on backhand, (c) speed move straight-line to a defender dummy.
Player completes all three elements back to back.
Finish with a shot on net after the speed move.
Run 6 full circuits with 30-second rests.
Goal
Success is executing each deke move in the circuit cleanly enough that a real defender would be faked out, no telegraphing, no hesitation.
Helpful cues
- Sell the move with your shoulders before your hands
- The puck follows the body, commit the body first
- Through the deke, your eyes must go to the net, not the puck

Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
