How it works
Execute accurate breakout passes under active forechecking pressure with correct target selection and timing.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
A breakout pass made under pressure must be both accurate and well-timed , a fraction too late or too wide sends the puck to a forechecker. Training breakout passes against active pressure develops the composure and technical control needed to execute under game conditions. Players who make clean breakout passes under pressure are the engine of fast offensive transitions.
Defense pair retrieves a puck in the corner; a forechecker pressures immediately.
D must find the correct outlet, winger, center breakout, or D-to-D, and deliver a clean pass under pressure.
Forwards receive and transition into the neutral zone.
Run 10 reps, rotating which corner and which forechecker pressure is applied.
Goal
You've got it when your breakout pass lands on your winger's tape under forechecking pressure, it doesn't get picked off or overskated.
Helpful cues
- Identify your target before you touch the puck
- Hard pass, a soft pass gives the forechecker time to intercept
- If your primary outlet is covered, go to your secondary immediately, no hesitation
