How it works

Execute a coordinated defensive box formation and controlled collapse to limit high-danger scoring chances against a power play.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

The box penalty kill is the dominant system at all competitive levels, and executing it correctly requires precise positioning, communication, and disciplined rotation under constant pressure. Players who understand the box , when to hold position, when to close, when to collapse , are invaluable penalty killers. A well-executed box makes elite power play units work harder for every shot.

1

Set up a 4-player penalty kill box against a 5-player power play unit.

2

Power play moves the puck; the box must rotate in unison, no individual freelancing.

3

When the power play attacks the net or drops the puck to the bumper, the box must collapse and pressure.

4

Run 90-second penalty kill segments; coach grades box integrity after each goal or clear.

Goal

You're doing it right when the box holds its shape through the whole power play and forces the offense to the perimeter.

Helpful cues

  • Box first, close second. Do not leave the box early
  • point player shooting? Two crash the net, two cover the weak side
  • Communicate constantly, talk through every rotation

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Run against a stationary power play unit to establish box positioning before adding movement.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a power play with a net-front presence and point shot on every possession to test the box against all formations.
