How it works
Develop elite puck handling under full defensive pressure by protecting the puck, beating a defender, and finishing with a scoring chance.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
- goalie
Your focus
At the highest level, puck handling must function under physical pressure from a closing defender who is using active stick and body positioning. Combining protection, evasion, and finishing in a single drill replicates the complete offensive sequence a player must execute to convert possession into a scoring chance. Players who master this sequence are consistent offensive threats in every situation.
Player receives a pass in the offensive zone corner with a defender immediately applying pressure.
Player must protect the puck along the boards, wait for or create a gap, then beat the defender 1-on-1.
Player must finish the play with a shot on the live goalie.
Run 10 reps; evaluate protection quality, beat timing, and shot placement.
Goal
You're doing it right when you protect through pressure, beat the defender with a committed move, and get your shot off in one smooth sequence.
Helpful cues
- Your back is your shield, use it before you try to beat them
- Wait for your moment, don't force the deke before the gap is there
- The shot after the deke must be immediate, hesitation gives the defender recovery time
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Defender starts 2 steps behind to give the player slightly more time to establish protection before the pressure arrives.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a second defender who activates from the front of the net 3 seconds after the play starts, creating a time limit on the 1-on-1 escape. No account needed
