How it works
Execute a coordinated 2-1 forecheck trap that uses body positioning and angling to force a turnover in the offensive zone.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
At an advanced level, checking is a team system, not just an individual action. The ability to coordinate a forecheck trap , where one player angles the puck carrier and a second cuts off the outlet pass , creates turnovers through collective checking intelligence. This mirrors exactly what elite programs run as their offensive-zone forecheck system.
Defending team (2 forwards) sets up at the red line; attacking team (1 puck carrier + 1 support) enters the zone.
F1 of the forechecking pair angles the puck carrier toward the boards immediately on zone entry.
F2 reads F1's angle and positions to cut off the nearest outlet pass or support player.
Drill succeeds when F1 or F2 legally wins possession; rotate units every 3 minutes.
Goal
You're doing it right when your forecheck duo funnels the puck carrier into the trap and forces a turnover without either of you cheating out of position.
Helpful cues
- F1, your angle is the trigger; commit hard
- F2, don't chase the puck, cut the pass lane
- Forecheck as a unit, not as two individuals

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
