How it works

Develop elite off-puck support awareness by running a full-ice scrimmage with a mandatory three-support rule, the puck carrier must always have three support options available.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Elite hockey teams are characterized by constant off-puck support movement , players who are always presenting themselves as options in all three zones create an opponent's defensive dilemma that is impossible to fully solve. Training the three-support rule hardwires the habit of constant, purposeful off-puck movement across all three zones simultaneously. Teams that consistently have three support options available generate more scoring chances and turn over the puck less.

1

Establish the rule: at all times, the puck carrier must have minimum 3 teammates available as passing options.

2

Referee blows whistle whenever the support drops below 3 options, possession turns over to the other team.

3

Run a full 5-on-5 scrimmage with this rule enforced.

4

Post-scrimmage debrief: which team had better support movement? What positions were most consistently missing?

Goal

You're doing it right when the puck carrier always has three clear options, if someone's stranded without a support player nearby, fix it.

Helpful cues

  • If your carrier is alone, you have failed your job, find a support angle immediately
  • Three options means one in front, one behind, one wide, not three in the same lane
  • Reading where the puck is going tells you where you need to be before it gets there

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce to a two-support minimum to build the habit before requiring three simultaneous options.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require the three supports to be in different zones of the offensive zone, top of circles, half-wall, and net-front, specific spatial positioning required.
