How it works
Develop correct defensive zone positioning by executing a structured player-coverage assignment in a live 3-on-3 drill.

Your focus
Correct defensive positioning prevents high-danger scoring chances more effectively than athleticism alone , a well-positioned defender eliminates an attacker's options before a play develops. Teaching players to identify their assignment, maintain appropriate positioning, and rotate coverage builds the disciplined defensive zone habits that reduce goals against at every level. Position is a decision, not a reaction.
Set up a 3-on-3 in the defensive zone with position assignments pre-called by coach.
Before each play starts, every defender must verbally call their assignment.
As attackers move, defenders must follow their assigned player while maintaining defensive position.
Debrief after each play on whether coverage assignments were maintained.
Goal
Success is every defender covering their assignment from the moment the puck enters the zone, no switching late, no confusion.
Helpful cues
- You are between your assignment and the net, not beside them
- Know where the puck is and where your assignment is at all times
- A coverage breakdown starts with one player losing their position, do not be that player
