How it works

Develop the snap shot technique and build shot repertoire by practicing snaps from multiple positions around the offensive zone.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • net
  • cones
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

The snap shot is the most versatile shooting option in modern hockey , it combines the speed of a wrist shot with the deception of a slap shot motion, making it extremely hard for goalies to read. Training snaps from multiple positions around the offensive zone develops the ability to shoot from any angle rather than only from a preferred spot. A complete shooter attacks from everywhere.

1

Set up 5 shooting stations around the offensive zone: right wing circle, left wing circle, slot, right hash, left hash.

2

Player starts at one station, receives a pass, and takes a snap shot within 1 second.

3

Player skates to the next station and repeats.

4

Complete two full circuits; goalie plays live for both.

Goal

Success is three clean snap shots from different spots that all hit net, quick load, quick release, accurate aim.

Helpful cues

  • The snap shot starts with a small backswing and explodes through the puck
  • Both hands work together, do not lead with just the top hand
  • Pick your corner before you shoot at every station

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Take two shots at each station before moving to build mechanics at each location.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a defender at two of the five stations who tries to block the shot, requiring quick release under pressure.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
