How it works
Develop coordinated defensive zone coverage by rotating the defensive unit through a structured zone-coverage rotation drill.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- cones
- ice
Your focus
Defensive zone breakdowns are almost always coverage errors , players who do not rotate correctly leave attackers uncovered near the net. Training a structured rotation system teaches players exactly where to be and when to move, creating the automatic defensive positioning that prevents high-danger scoring chances. Zone-coverage coordination reduces goals against more than any individual defensive skill.
Set up a 3-on-3 scenario in the defensive zone with coverage positions marked by cones.
Coach calls out an attacker movement and one defender must call out and rotate to cover.
All three defenders rotate simultaneously when any attacker moves.
Run 10 rotation scenarios; grade each rotation on correct positioning.
Goal
Success is rotating to the correct coverage assignment every time, no one left open, no two defenders on the same player.
Helpful cues
- Rotate as a unit, one player moves, all three adjust
- Call the coverage change before you move so your partners hear it
- Never leave the front of the net uncovered
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Use only two defenders and two attackers to reduce coverage complexity.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add live puck and let attackers play 3-on-3 for real, requiring defenders to rotate under competitive pressure. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
