How it works

Develop and evaluate elite skating efficiency by timing full-ice skating sequences that demand maximum speed with technical precision.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • timer
  • ice

Your focus

Skating efficiency , producing maximum speed with minimum energy expenditure , is the defining physical characteristic of elite hockey players. Testing full-ice skating sequences at maximum effort identifies mechanical breakdowns under fatigue and creates a benchmark for tracking improvement. Elite skaters who have measured and improved their efficiency outperform equally athletic skaters throughout the third period of games.

1

Player completes a timed full-ice sequence: goal line sprint, backward skate to red, forward crossovers around center circle, pivot and sprint to far goal line.

2

Coach records time and notes technical breakdowns (leaning back, not fully extending, poor crossover).

3

Player receives one technical correction and repeats immediately.

4

Run 4 timed reps; evaluate whether quality holds with each successive rep.

Goal

You're doing it right when your final time trial matches your first, technique hasn't broken down under fatigue.

Helpful cues

  • Full extension on every stride, half-strides cost you distance and speed
  • Upright and powerful in the crossovers, do not crouch
  • Your mechanics under fatigue define your skating ceiling

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Run the sequence at 80% to establish technical mechanics before pushing to full speed.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a puck to carry through the entire sequence, evaluating whether skating mechanics hold under the additional cognitive demand of puck control.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
