How it works
Introduce young wrestlers to body awareness and positional recognition by practicing staying tight and protected in a turtle position while a partner tries to turn them.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Young wrestlers first need to develop a sense of their own body in space before they can read scramble situations, and the turtle position is a fundamental reference point. This game-based drill makes positional awareness fun and intuitive, establishing body intelligence early. Learning to feel pressure and respond to it is the first step toward scramble reading ability.
One wrestler curls into a tight turtle position (knees and elbows on mat, head tucked).
Partner tries to turn the turtle wrestler over using only gentle pushing, no grabbing or lifting.
Turtle wrestler focuses on feeling which direction pressure is coming from and shifting weight to resist.
Switch roles after 30 seconds; discuss with the coach where the pressure came from and how they responded.
Goal
You've got it when you can hold turtle position for 10 seconds without being turned, tight and protected, not flat and exposed.
Helpful cues
- Feel the push before you move
- Keep your elbows and knees glued to the mat
- Which way is the pressure coming? Move away from it
