How it works

Develop the ability to quickly read a scramble position and decide whether rolling or holding ground will produce a better scoring outcome.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Scrambles reward wrestlers who make fast, correct decisions rather than those who simply react physically without awareness. This drill trains the cognitive piece , pausing for a split second to read the position , which separates experienced scramblers from reactive ones. Repeated decision-making reps build pattern recognition that transfers directly to live competition.

1

Coach places two wrestlers in a pre-set scramble position (e.g., one behind with a waist lock, one posting).

2

Coach says 'go' and both wrestlers live wrestle from that position for 5 seconds only.

3

Coach blows whistle to freeze and asks the bottom wrestler: 'Should you have rolled or held? What was the scoring opportunity?'

4

Wrestlers discuss, reset to same position, and repeat with the intent to execute the correct decision.

Goal

Success is making the correct roll-or-hold decision 4 out of 5 times in live scrambles, you knew the better choice.

Helpful cues

  • Freeze your brain for one count before you move
  • Where are his hips? That tells you what to do
  • Score first, surviving is second

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach gives a hint before saying 'go', 'think about rolling here', to scaffold the decision.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Positions are set randomly by the coach without preview, and wrestlers must immediately read and react with no discussion period.
