How it works

Teach wrestlers to identify and execute the correct hip switch or sit-out when their hips are exposed during a scramble.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Hip position determines scoring in most scramble situations, and recognizing when to switch hips is a foundational scramble skill. This drill isolates that decision point so wrestlers can practice it at a slow pace before applying it under pressure. Building the recognition habit early makes the correct response automatic during live wrestling.

1

Two wrestlers start chest to chest on their knees in a scramble position, each with hands on the other's hips.

2

Coach calls 'switch' and both wrestlers attempt to get their hips to the mat first by executing a sit-out.

3

The wrestler whose hips are in the better position (facing up or side-lying with leverage) earns a point.

4

Reset and repeat 8-10 times; discuss what determined the winner of each hip switch.

Goal

It's clicking when you recognize the moment to switch or sit out and act immediately, feel it, move, don't wait.

Helpful cues

  • Hips first, then look to score
  • Sit through, don't just fall sideways
  • Read your opponent's hips, not just your own

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start from a simpler seated position with less body entanglement.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a live scramble entry, a shot attempt that is defended, so the hip switch occurs from a more chaotic starting position.
