How it works

Build decision-making ability in scramble situations by limiting choices to two options and reinforcing correct selection.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Scrambles overwhelm wrestlers because they appear to have infinite options, leading to decision paralysis. Reducing the scramble to a two-choice decision framework builds the habit of rapid evaluation and commitment. Progressive complexity can be added once the two-choice habit is established.

1

Coach places wrestlers in a specific scramble position and designates two legal options (e.g., go behind or go to base).

2

Wrestlers have two seconds to assess and choose, must verbalize the choice before acting.

3

Execute the choice live for five seconds.

4

Coach evaluates: was the choice correct given the position? Was the execution committed?

Goal

Success is choosing the right of the two options at least 4 out of 5 times, the constraint makes the decision visible.

Helpful cues

  • Two options, pick one fast
  • Commit to the decision fully
  • Wrong choice executed well beats right choice hesitated

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back
