How it works
Teach young wrestlers to read an opponent's stance and select the appropriate basic response.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Recognizing visual cues in an opponent's posture is the first step in developing wrestling intelligence. Simple stance-to-response mapping helps young athletes understand that wrestling has logic behind its actions. Early decision practice prevents the habit of random, aimless movement.
Coach demonstrates two partner stances: square (feet even) and staggered (lead leg forward).
Wrestler learns: square = arm drag opportunity; staggered = single-leg attack opportunity.
Partner randomly presents a stance; wrestler identifies it aloud and selects the response.
Execute the selected technique, partner provides cooperative resistance.
Goal
You've got it when you see the stance and your response is already chosen, no pause, just the right reaction.
Helpful cues
- See their feet, pick your move
- Choose before you move
- One read, one attack
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Partner holds stance statically for three seconds, longer read time.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Partner switches stances while moving, wrestler must read in motion. No account needed
