How it works

Introduce young wrestlers to the concept of reading an opponent's stance and choosing a basic appropriate response.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Decision making in wrestling begins with reading visual cues, and the opponent's stance is the first and most available cue. Teaching young wrestlers to notice stance details builds observational habits that become the foundation of tactical awareness. Simple read-and-respond training makes wrestling feel logical rather than random.

1

Partner stands in one of two stances: wide and low, or tall and narrow.

2

Coach teaches wrestler that wide-low = go to the leg; tall-narrow = tie up and push/pull.

3

Partner randomly switches between stances; wrestler identifies it and calls the answer before acting.

4

Run 10 repetitions, wrestler earns a point for each correct read and response.

Goal

You've got it when you see your partner's stance and you already know what response fits, reading happens before thinking.

Helpful cues

  • Look at their feet first
  • Wide open? Attack low. Tall? Tie up.
  • See it, say it, do it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Partner holds each stance for five seconds before the wrestler must respond, more time to read.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Partner moves continuously and the wrestler must read the stance mid-movement.
