How it works

Develop high-level situational decision making by assigning wrestlers specific positions and constraints before live rounds.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Open live wrestling allows wrestlers to default to comfortable patterns, avoiding the decisions they struggle with. Situational constraints force specific decision trees to be exercised, building the complete tactical vocabulary a high school wrestler needs. Deliberate decision practice accelerates tactical development far faster than undirected sparring.

1

Assign a specific situation before each round (e.g., 'You're on top, you need a pin, not just riding time').

2

Two-minute live round with the assigned constraint active.

3

Wrestler must verbalize their primary decision at the start of the round.

4

Coach debrief: identify key decision moments, what triggered them, and whether the wrestler adapted.

Goal

You're there when the assigned constraint forces better decisions than you'd make in an open round, structure reveals your tendencies.

Helpful cues

  • The situation tells you the move
  • Have a primary and a backup plan
  • Read, decide, commit

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Provide two pre-approved options, wrestler chooses between them rather than generating decisions.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Change the constraint mid-round ('You just gave up two, what changes?').

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
