How it works

Train wrestlers to evaluate their positional advantage during a scramble and make a go-for-more or consolidate decision.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Many young wrestlers in good positions try to do too much and lose the advantage, while others consolidate too early and leave points on the mat. Learning to assess whether to extend or secure a position is a critical tactical skill. This judgment develops mat intelligence that benefits wrestlers at every level.

1

Pairs start in a scramble position designated by coach (neither wrestler has clear control).

2

Coach blows whistle, both wrestlers take one second to assess and make a decision: attack or secure.

3

Both execute their decision for five seconds of live wrestling.

4

Coach pauses and asks each wrestler: 'What did you read? What did you decide? Was it right?'

Goal

Success is choosing to go for more or consolidate correctly 4 out of 5 times in scrambles, you knew which was better before acting.

Helpful cues

  • Read before you react
  • Secure the point before chasing the pin
  • Know when you're winning the position

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach identifies who has the advantage before the assessment phase, wrestler only decides how to use it.

UpLVL it
