Decision Making

How it works
Train wrestlers to make quick attack-or-defend decisions based on their opponent's motion and hand position.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Young wrestlers who don't make decisions become reactive and passive, leading to penalty points and lost matches. This drill creates simple, clear decision triggers that wrestlers can apply immediately. Building decision confidence at this age prevents the passive wrestling habits that are hard to break later.
Partners circle in tie-up position.
Coach designates: if partner pulls down on collar, attack; if partner pushes, sprawl and counter.
Partner randomly applies one action; wrestler reads and responds with the correct counter.
Twenty repetitions; track correct decisions and reward speed of decision over power.
Goal
It's clicking when you attack before your partner finishes their move, your read was early enough to beat them to it.
Helpful cues
- Their move is your cue
- Don't wait, react and attack
