How it works

Build confidence by repeatedly placing wrestlers in dominant top control positions and reinforcing their ability to maintain them.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Wrestlers who don't believe they belong in dominant positions will give them up unnecessarily. Drilling the dominant position builds the physical and psychological sense of ownership over those situations. Confidence in top control directly increases scoring opportunities in matches.

1

Wrestler starts in a strong top position (cross-body ride or tight waist).

2

Partner works to escape at 50% effort while top wrestler focuses on maintaining control.

3

Hold for 30 seconds; coach reinforces good control moments verbally.

4

Run five sets, gradually increasing partner effort, wrestler should succeed in most sets.

Helpful cues

  • You belong here, stay
  • Heavy hips, light hands
  • Control the position, control the match

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge
