Your focus
Small-sided games force more individual responsibility and expose players to more ball contacts per minute than full 6v6 play. Specific scoring scenarios , such as starting behind or needing a run of points , train players to compete with urgency and adapt tactics on the fly, a critical skill in match play.
Run 3v3 games to 7 points using rally scoring.
Introduce a handicap each game: one team starts at 0-3, forcing a competitive comeback.
Mid-game, coach introduces a special rule: next 3 points are double-value (creates a mini surge scenario).
After each game, coach asks: 'What tactical adjustment did you make when you were behind?'
Track which team scores most during the double-value segment. Award an 'Elite Competitor' mark to the best performer.
Goal
You're there when the 2v2 or 3v3 format forces you to make decisions you wouldn't face 6v6, fill gaps, read faster, choose smarter.
Helpful cues
- Being down is temporary, what you do about it is the story
- Double-value is the moment to go for it, be aggressive
- The best competitors raise their game when the stakes are highest
