How it works
Introduce young players to competitive play by racing to five points in small-sided rally scoring games.

Your focus
Competition is a learnable skill. Young players who are exposed to small-scale, low-stakes competitive formats develop a healthy compete instinct without the anxiety of full-game stakes. Short games with quick outcomes teach players to focus immediately, recover quickly from losing, and experience winning as a result of effort.
Set up 2v2 over a lowered net or a rope strung at appropriate height.
Play rally scoring to 5 points. The team that wins serves the next game.
Rotate opponents after each game so every player competes against multiple teams.
Coach emphasizes effort and attitude after every game, not just the outcome.
Track wins on a whiteboard. After all games, celebrate the most improved team and the best compete attitude.
Goal
You've got it when you care who wins the rally, you're not just keeping score, you're playing to win each one.
Helpful cues
- Play hard on every single rally, not just the close ones
- Losing a game is not losing practice, reset and compete harder
- Hustle for every ball, even when you're ahead
