Broad Jump to Spike Approach

How it works
Develop lower-body explosive power by linking broad jumps into the beginning of an attack approach.
What you need
- tape (to mark a starting line)
- volleyball court
Your focus
The broad jump builds horizontal explosive power that transfers directly to the long approach strides used in attacking. Combining it with the first steps of a spike approach teaches players to harness ground force. USA Volleyball IMPACT emphasizes explosive footwork as a key component of athletic development.
Mark a starting line on the court with tape.
Player performs two consecutive broad jumps (two-foot takeoff, two-foot landing) for maximum distance.
On landing from the second jump, player immediately transitions into the first two steps of a spike approach (right-left for right-handed, left-right for left-handed).
Measure and record the combined broad jump distance.
Complete 4 jumps per player, rest 30 seconds between attempts.
Goal
It's clicking when your broad jumps flow right into your approach, there's no stopping and restarting between the jump and the footwork.
Helpful cues
- Push the ground away, don't just fall forward
- Soft landing to store energy for the next jump
- Smooth transition into your approach steps

Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
