How it works

Increase vertical jump height through repeated explosive approach jumps with a full arm swing.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net
  • vertical jump marker or tape on wall

Your focus

The approach jump converts horizontal momentum into vertical height , a skill unique to volleyball attacking. Repeated approach jumps with maximum effort develop the fast-twitch muscle fibers responsible for explosive vertical power. Tracking jump height motivates athletes to improve and provides measurable progress data.

1

Mark the player's standing reach on the wall with tape.

2

Player runs a full 3- or 4-step approach toward the wall and jumps, touching as high as possible.

3

Mark the highest touch. The difference between standing reach and jump touch is the vertical jump measurement.

4

Player performs 3 maximum-effort approach jumps, resting 45 seconds between each.

5

Record the best jump of the day and compare week over week.

Goal

Success is a jump where you feel your arms pull you up, when your arm swing adds to your height, not just your legs doing the work.

Helpful cues

  • Penultimate step is your power step, make it big
  • Snap both arms up together for maximum height
  • Reach at the top, don't stop your swing early
