Your focus
Lateral shuffling is the foundation of court coverage in volleyball. Learning to stop and change direction without crossing feet builds the movement patterns needed to get in position for passes and digs. Early development of these habits prevents bad footwork from becoming ingrained.
Place two cones 10 feet apart on the sideline.
Player starts in an athletic stance (knees bent, weight on balls of feet) at the left cone.
On coach's signal, player shuffles laterally to the right cone without crossing feet.
Player touches the cone, stops completely, then shuffles back to the left cone.
Repeat for 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds. Complete 3 rounds.
Goal
You've got it when you stop completely between markers without wobbling, quick feet and a solid stop, every time.
Helpful cues
- Stay low, bend your knees!
- Don't let your feet cross
- Touch and go, quick stop!
