How it works
Develop consistent lateral shuffling mechanics across the full back-row defensive zone.
What you need
- cones
- volleyball court
Your focus
Back-row defenders must cover a wide court area efficiently, requiring controlled lateral movement and sharp stops. This drill reinforces proper shuffling mechanics over longer distances similar to game situations. Repetition builds muscle memory so movement becomes automatic during play.
Set four cones across the back row: left antenna, left third, right third, right antenna.
Player starts at the left antenna in a defensive ready position.
Player shuffles to each cone in sequence, touching each one before changing direction.
On reaching the right antenna, player sprints forward to the attack line, then backpedals to starting position.
Complete 5 full cycles with 20-second rest between each.
Goal
It's clicking when your shuffle stays smooth the whole width of the court, no crossing your feet, no leaning over.
Helpful cues
- Hips stay square to the net
- Short, quick steps, don't overstride
- Eyes up, not on the floor
