Your focus
Diving is a critical emergency skill, but the recovery afterward determines whether the player can contribute again on the same play. Practicing the full sequence , dive, roll, recover, re-position , builds the body awareness and quickness needed in fast-paced rallies. USA Volleyball IMPACT emphasizes that every defensive action must include a recovery plan.
Player starts at center back in a defensive stance.
Coach rolls a ball to the player's right, forcing a low extension or dive to save it.
Player contacts the ball, completes the dive and forward roll to absorb impact safely.
Player immediately springs back to feet and shuffles to a cone placed 8 feet to their left.
Coach signals readiness; player resets to center back and repeats to the opposite side. Complete 8 total dives.
Goal
Success is completing the dive and popping back to your feet in one connected motion, dive, recover, ready, under 2 seconds.
Helpful cues
- Lead with your platform, not your body
- Roll through the shoulder, don't slam
- Eyes up the moment you're back on your feet
