Your focus
Game-speed agility requires reading the play and reacting without pre-planning movement. This drill removes predictability, forcing players to read the hitter's cues and change direction in real time. USA Volleyball IMPACT stresses that defensive positioning begins before the ball is hit , this drill trains that anticipatory movement.
Place a defender at center back. Place three targets (cones) on the floor: line 1 (deep left), line 2 (short middle), line 3 (deep right).
A hitter or coach stands on a box at the attack line on the opposite side of the net.
The hitter attacks or tips to one of the three target zones without signaling which.
Defender must read the contact and immediately shuffle or sprint to intercept, attempting a controlled dig.
Run 15 balls per set, rest 60 seconds, complete 3 sets. Track percentage of successful digs.
Goal
It's real when you react to the live ball and your feet are already moving before you consciously decide, reaction, not planning.
Helpful cues
- Watch the hitter's shoulder, not the ball
- First step must be explosive
- Stay balanced, don't lean early
