How it works

Respond to any failed rep with measurably higher effort and intention on the next three reps.

Your focus

The most common failure-response pattern is reduced effort , athletes unconsciously back off after a mistake. This drill makes the opposite response automatic: failure is a trigger to increase intentionality, not decrease it. Over time, coaches stop seeing the energy dip that follows adversity.

1

Perform a rep that misses the objective.

2

Instead of reducing intensity, the next rep must be executed with visibly higher deliberate effort.

3

Continue for three consecutive 'come-back reps' after any miss.

4

Coach rates effort on the three come-back reps vs. the reps before the miss (1–5 scale).

5

Debrief: what changed in your body, breathing, or approach during the come-back reps?

Goal

Coach rates come-back reps at four or higher (out of five) on three consecutive missed reps.

Helpful cues

  • Failure is a green light for more intentionality, not less
  • Come-back reps are the ones coaches remember
  • The athlete who doubles down is the one who earns more reps

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start with a single come-back rep, build to three over multiple sessions.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach increases drill difficulty immediately after the miss, player must double down at a higher level.
