How it works

Adjust your approach immediately when coach changes a key rule or condition mid-drill, no stopping, no complaining.

Your focus

The ability to adapt quickly without resisting change is one of the most valued traits in competitive athletes. This drill creates controlled disruption so athletes can practice the cognitive and emotional reset that rapid adaptation requires. Complaints and slow adjustments become visible , and therefore coachable.

1

Player begins a drill with a defined approach or plan.

2

Mid-drill (without warning), coach changes one key condition: a rule, a constraint, or the drill objective.

3

Player must adapt immediately, no stopping, no verbal objection, no full reset.

4

Coach measures: how many reps did it take for performance to return to pre-disruption baseline?

5

Goal each session: reduce that number.

Goal

Player's performance returns to baseline within three reps of the disruption.

Helpful cues

  • The disruption is the drill, not a problem to work around
  • Complaining costs reps; adapting earns them
  • Fast adapters are the players who don't need a timeout

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach announces the change is coming thirty seconds before making it.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach changes two conditions simultaneously, player must adapt to both.
