How it works

Identify one specific, genuine moment of quality in a partner's performance and deliver targeted positive feedback.

Your focus

Generic encouragement ('good job') is low-information leadership. Specific positive feedback ('that adjustment you made on your footwork after the second rep was sharp') is high-information , it tells the athlete what's working, which reinforces it. This drill builds the observation skill that makes real leadership possible: you can't lift someone specifically if you weren't paying close attention.

1

Player and partner alternate reps while one observes.

2

The observer's assignment: find ONE genuine, specific moment of quality to call out.

3

Deliver the feedback immediately after the rep: name what specifically was good and why.

4

Debrief: what did you have to pay attention to in order to give specific feedback?

5

Goal: both players finish the drill having received specific, actionable positive feedback.

Goal

Partner confirms the feedback was specific and actionable (not general praise) on four of five reps.

Helpful cues

  • Specific feedback says you were watching, generic feedback says you weren't
  • Find what's working with the same attention you give to what's broken
  • The observation is the leadership skill, the words just deliver it
