How it works

Set a visible standard through one deliberately executed rep, describe it before you do it.

Your focus

Leadership through action is more durable than leadership through instruction. This drill makes the connection explicit: the player must articulate the standard before demonstrating it, then receive feedback on whether execution matched the stated intention. Over time this builds the discipline to perform to a defined standard, not just a felt sense of effort.

1

Before a rep, player describes out loud what maximum effort and correct execution looks like for that specific action.

2

Execute the rep as if demonstrating it to someone who has never seen it done.

3

Coach gives feedback: did the execution match the description?

4

Debrief: is your stated standard aligned with the standard you actually perform to?

5

Repeat until the stated and executed standards consistently match.

Goal

Coach confirms execution matched the stated standard on three consecutive reps.

Helpful cues

  • You can't lead to a standard you can't execute yourself
  • The description is a contract, the rep is the delivery
  • Leaders don't lower the standard when it gets hard

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach sets the standard for the player to match in the first three reps.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Player must execute two consecutive reps at the stated standard, not just one.
