How it works
Actively listen to a coaching instruction, then repeat it back in your own words before acting on it.
Your focus
Most communication failures happen at the reception stage , athletes hear the words but miss the intent. This drill forces active listening by requiring replay before execution. It also gives coaches real-time confirmation that the message landed correctly, which prevents repeated corrections for the same issue.
Coach gives a piece of instruction (one to two sentences, no more).
Player pauses three seconds, then repeats it back in their own words.
Coach confirms, corrects, or clarifies the replay.
Player executes the rep using the confirmed instruction.
Repeat for five rounds, track how often the replay matched the intent.
Goal
Player successfully mirrors intent (not just words) on at least four of five rounds.
Helpful cues
- Pause before you reply, your brain needs a second to encode
- Own words only, don't just parrot back the exact phrase
- If your replay is wrong, that's useful data, not a failure
