How it works
Treat the first rep after feedback as a deliberate statement, announce what it will communicate before executing.
Your focus
Coaches read athletes constantly, and the rep immediately after feedback is the loudest statement a player makes about their coachability. This drill makes that dynamic explicit so players begin to treat the first rep not as 'trying the correction' but as 'choosing how I respond to coaching.' The self-awareness it builds changes long-term behavior.
Coach delivers a correction or piece of advice.
Before executing, player states out loud: 'My first rep is going to say ____ about me.'
Execute the rep.
Coach gives feedback: what did that rep actually say?
Debrief: is there a gap between the intended signal and the actual one? What created it?
Goal
Player's stated intention matches coach's observation of the rep on three consecutive rounds.
Helpful cues
- Your first rep talks louder than anything you say
- Coaches don't forget the first rep after a correction
- Intention without execution is still a missed rep
