How it works
Connect to genuine appreciation for the activity before a challenging rep, then measure the effect on effort and quality.
Your focus
Motivation that depends on external conditions (mood, score, weather) is fragile. Motivation rooted in appreciation for the opportunity is durable. This drill plants a specific thought before a specific rep and tracks the result , building the skill of choosing a frame before executing, rather than waiting to see how you feel.
Before a challenging rep (one the athlete typically dreads or backs off from), pause.
State one genuine, specific thing you're grateful for about this activity, not generic, real.
Execute the rep with that frame: this is a privilege, not a burden.
Rate effort and quality on this rep vs. a similar rep without the frame (1–5 each).
Debrief: does the frame change effort? Quality? Both? What does that tell you?
Goal
Player rates effort and quality four or higher on three consecutive gratitude-framed reps.
Helpful cues
- Gratitude is a frame, not a feeling, you can choose it
- Generic gratitude doesn't move the needle; specific does
- If nothing changes, the frame wasn't real, find a genuine one
