How it works
Attempt a difficult shooting or dribbling challenge multiple times, building the habit of persisting after failure.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
- mini goals
Your focus
Resilience begins with the simple habit of trying again. Young players who experience structured repetition through failure , and are praised for persistence rather than outcome , develop the emotional toughness that separates long-term players from early dropouts.
Set up a mini goal 10 yards from player. Place 8 balls in a line.
Player shoots all 8 balls and counts how many go in.
Between each shot that misses, player says 'try again' out loud.
After 8 shots, player writes down (or tells coach) their score.
Player gets 8 more shots. Must beat their first score.
Celebrate improvement, not perfection.
Helpful cues
- Every miss is just information about what to fix
- Say 'try again' like you mean it, you're talking to yourself
- The score isn't the point, the trying is the point
