How it works

Compete in a shooting challenge with a difficult difficulty setting, building resilience through tolerance of failure and sustained accuracy improvement.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • goals

Your focus

Elite shooters accept a high rate of failure during practice because they know it accelerates development. Training high-difficulty shooting builds resilience to the frustration of missing , something most players avoid , creating a sustainable improvement mindset.

1

Set up shooting at a goal with corners blocked by cones, only top corners are valid targets.

2

Player has 20 shots. Only top-corner strikes count.

3

Track success rate. Expected: 2-5 out of 20.

4

Each miss, player must say one adjustment ('next shot, hit it lower,' 'lean forward more').

5

After 20 shots, compare first-half success rate vs. second-half.

6

Debrief: how did the adjustment habit change your focus?

Goal

Success is taking the shot every single rep regardless of the previous outcome, no shrinking, no skipping your turn. Your 10th shot should look as confident as your 1st.

Helpful cues

  • High failure rate means high learning rate, if you're succeeding at 80%, the challenge is too easy
  • Talk yourself through adjustments, that's self-coaching
  • Resilience here means staying technical when the shots aren't going in

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow any part of the goal, not just top corners.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Shots must be moving, player dribbles then shoots without stopping.
