Your focus
Real competitive resilience is tested when teams are losing badly and the temptation to give up is strongest. Creating these scenarios in training , with a format that makes comeback possible , teaches players that sustained effort through adversity is always worth it.
Small-sided activity with mini goals. One team starts 4-0 up.
Goals now count double for the trailing team.
Trailing team earns a 'resilience token' for every 60-second period they maintain high effort (coach judges).
3 resilience tokens = 1 extra goal added to their score.
Game lasts 8 minutes; final score accounts for resilience tokens.
Debrief: did any trailing team player ever give up? What happened when they didn't?
Helpful cues
- Effort earns tokens, not goals. Keep working.
- One goal at a time, don't look at the full gap, just the next goal
- Resilience is visible in your body, head up, tight team, keep moving
