How it works

Compete at maximum intensity while managing multiple adversities (red card, VAR reversal, disallowed goal) to build elite-level resilience.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • goals

Your focus

True resilience at the highest level means performing through multiple sequential adversities without mental collapse. Manufacturing these conditions in training prepares players for the emotional and tactical demands of high-stakes competition where bad things happen in bunches.

1

8v8 full scrimmage. Coach has an 'adversity deck', cards with events.

2

Every 3 minutes, coach draws a card: 'red card,' 'disallowed goal,' 'penalty against you,' 'restart from 0-0.'

3

Teams must adapt and continue playing without protesting.

4

Resilience is graded: body language, immediate effort response, speed of tactical adaptation.

5

After each adversity card, teams have 30 seconds to regroup before play resumes.

6

Post-game: identify the one adversity event each team handled best and worst.

Goal

It's working when adversity events don't disrupt your next possession, the disallowed goal happened, now win the restart. Elite resilience is invisible from the outside.

Helpful cues

  • React in the first second: head up, call it together, go again
  • Adversity tests character, what did yours show today?
  • Protest wastes energy; adaptation wins games

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back
