How it works

Learn the basic triangle shape, always position yourself at an angle to give a passing option.

What you need

  • soccer ball

Your focus

Young players naturally stand in straight lines. Positioning is about being at angles , making triangles. This drill teaches the concept with movement so players feel it before they think about it in games.

1

Parent or coach stands with the ball. Player stands 5 yards away.

2

Parent takes one step left or right. Player immediately adjusts to form a triangle angle, not a straight line.

3

Parent takes another step. Player adjusts again.

4

Go for 30 seconds of continuous movement, then switch.

5

Repeat 3 times each.

Goal

You've got it when you automatically adjust to a triangle angle every time the parent moves without being told.

Helpful cues

  • Never stand directly behind the ball, be at an angle
  • When they move, you move
  • Show a passing window, don't hide

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Parent moves slowly and pauses after each step.

UpLVL it
