How it works

Learn and maintain defensive positioning as a unit in a 4v0 shape walkthrough, then apply it vs. attackers.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests

Your focus

Defensive positioning is often coached as individual player marking but is actually a unit skill. Teaching players to shift as a line and maintain compactness, width, and depth as a group develops the positional awareness that makes organized defenses effective.

1

Coach sets up 4 defenders in a flat back-four across a 30-yard line.

2

Coach walks attackers around the field; defenders must shift the line to maintain shape.

3

Practice: pressing together (line moves forward), recovering (line drops), shifting (line moves left/right).

4

Walk through 10 different positional scenarios.

5

Add 4 passive attackers; defenders shift to cut off passing lanes.

6

Add 4 active attackers; play for 5 minutes.

Goal

Success is maintaining the defensive shape against live attackers after learning it in the walkthrough, no gaps appear between defenders that attackers can run through.

Helpful cues

  • Shortest distance between defenders should stay the same, don't create gaps
  • Move together, if one shifts, everyone shifts
  • Keep your line between the ball and your goal at all times
