Your focus
Understanding that positions create space for teammates is the first step in positional awareness. Teaching young players to find and maintain zones , rather than clustering around the ball , is the foundation of all team tactical development.
Divide a 25x20 yard area into 4 zones using cones. 4v4.
Assign one player per zone per team. Players must stay in their zone.
Play possession; the ball can enter any zone but the player stays in theirs.
Goal is scored by getting the ball to the target player in the far zone.
Switch positions every 3 minutes so all players experience every zone.
Debrief: how did having space in your zone help the team?
Goal
You've got it when you hold your zone without drifting, a teammate receives and you're already in your spot, not jogging there after the pass.
Helpful cues
- Stay in your zone, trust your teammates to be in theirs
- When you're in space, call for the ball
- Spread out, you make the field bigger for your team
