How it works

Lead a halftime team talk during a practice game, setting a tactical focus and motivating teammates.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • goals

Your focus

Leadership in soccer includes the ability to communicate under pressure and motivate peers , skills that don't develop unless practiced. Giving players structured halftime leadership moments builds the communication confidence that leads to effective in-game leadership.

1

Play a 10-minute small-sided game (small-sided activity).

2

At the midpoint, each team's appointed leader gives a 90-second team talk.

3

Talk must include: one thing we did well, one thing to fix, and a motivating call.

4

Teammates must be silent and attentive.

5

Coach observes but does not interfere.

6

After the second half, coach gives feedback on the leadership quality.

Helpful cues

  • Start with something positive, you earn the right to coach with encouragement
  • Be specific: 'we need to track back faster' beats 'work harder'
  • End with energy, leave them wanting to go out and prove you right

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach provides 3 bullet points for the leader to use, they just deliver.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Leader must also choose one tactical substitution and explain it.
