How it works
Lead a team through a deliberately manufactured crisis (red card, going 2 goals down) to develop crisis leadership skills.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
- scrimmage vests
- goals
Your focus
Leadership is most tested in adversity , when a player is sent off, when goals are conceded, when the team is disorganized. Training players to lead through manufactured crises prepares them for the real match moments that separate great leaders from average ones.
Begin an small-sided activity scrimmage. After 5 minutes, coach announces 'red card', a random player is removed from one team.
That team's captain must immediately reorganize into a new shape, verbally, in real time.
At 10 minutes, the same team concedes a goal from a dead ball.
Captain calls a 30-second huddle; team must reorganize and restart with new energy.
Play continues for 10 more minutes.
Debrief: how did the leadership respond to each crisis?
Helpful cues
- Crisis is when real leaders emerge, anyone can lead when it's easy
- Immediate action: shape first, emotion second
- Huddle gives everyone permission to reset, use it deliberately
