Your focus
Offering two options and requiring a choice , however simple , builds the fundamental decision-making habit. Young players who learn to look for options before receiving the ball develop a cognitive habit that scales into sophisticated tactical awareness.
Set up a 10x10 yard square with a player at each corner. Ball starts with Player A.
Player A has two passing options: Player B (left) or Player D (right).
Coach stands in the center and points left or right just before A receives the ball.
Player A must pass to the indicated direction.
Each new player receives and makes the same two-option decision.
Progress to coach calling before A has the ball, forces scanning.
Goal
You've got it when you choose the correct target every time before the ball arrives, scanning happens before the pass, not after you receive it.
Helpful cues
- Look before you get the ball, know your options early
- Head up means you can make faster decisions
- Quick pass beats the best dribble, if the option is there, use it
