How it works

Make correct transition decisions (attack immediately or reset possession) within 3 seconds of winning the ball.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • goals

Your focus

Transition decision-making is where games are won and lost. The 3 seconds after winning the ball are the most dangerous time for the opponent , players who can read transition situations and decide instantly become decisive match contributors.

1

Play 6v6 on a 50x35 yard field.

2

Define two transition decisions: 'GO' (counter-attack immediately) or 'RESET' (recycle possession).

3

Every time possession changes, the new team's captain must call 'GO' or 'RESET' within 2 seconds.

4

If 'GO' is called incorrectly (not enough space), concede a point to the other team.

5

If 'GO' is called correctly and executed, award 3 points for a goal.

6

Coach evaluates decision quality post-game.

Goal

You're there when you commit to attacking or resetting within 3 seconds of winning the ball, hesitation past that window means the decision came too late.

Helpful cues

  • How many of them are between you and the goal? That's your 'GO' test
  • Counter if there are fewer defenders than attackers, reset if outnumbered
  • The captain calls it, everyone else reacts. No committee decisions.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach makes the 'GO' or 'RESET' call, players practice executing, not deciding.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Reduce to 3 seconds for full execution of the decision, not just the call.
