Your focus
Decision-making in possession requires risk assessment , when to play safe and when to go for the decisive ball. This rondo format trains exactly that by offering both a safe option (circulation) and a reward option (playing through the gate).
Set up a 12-yard circle. 5v2 rondo. Two cone gates placed across from each other inside the circle.
Possessing team circulates normally but earns 2 points for passing through a gate.
Safe passes along the outside earn 0 points but maintain possession.
If defenders win the ball, they immediately become the possession team.
Play for 5 minutes; team with most points wins.
Debrief: when was the right time to try the gate pass?
Goal
It's clicking when you know when to play safe and when to go through the gate, conservative under pressure, aggressive when you have space.
Helpful cues
- Look for the gate option first, then the safe pass
- Don't force the gate pass when a defender is blocking it
- Good decisions aren't always the exciting ones
